Information

An in-class interactive lesson about mosquitoes, the diseases they carry and how to manage them, followed by a mosquito collection and study experience supported remotely by scientists. This experience can be tailored to different age groups and ability level.

This activity is supported in part by the South Australia Department of Environment and Water.

Please note: this activity is currently only available within South Australia and selected parts of the Northern Territory.

The program for a school includes two components:

  1. In-class lesson: this involves a mix of presentation and participation.

Topics covered include: What is a mosquito?; mosquito life cycle and ecology; types of mosquito; mosquito-borne diseases; how to control mosquitoes. Participation activities can be modified slightly for different ages, and include: identifying mosquitoes, building a mosquito, mosquito body parts and names, observing mosquitoes

  2. Students becoming Mozzie Monitors: this involves a teacher-led on-going class or group activity involving mosquito collections, identification, and submitting observations on to the iNaturalist citizen science database.

In this option, teachers are left with a mosquito trap and other equipment to enable on-going collection and reporting of observations in the Mozzie Monitors program. We provide mosquito collection and study equipment including: mozzie trap, dipper, containers, cage for study. This additional activity will be supported remotely by us and could be for a duration to be determined by the teacher and school.

For schools and classes seeking education but without any mosquito collection or study, a Mozzie Monitors single lesson (duration 35-55 min) can also be delivered. Ideally, we would like to do at least two visits to a school, revisiting and building on information with the students.
